How Holiday Decor Can Help You Get Press

A Very Merry Holiday Home Tour

The holiday season is brimming with opportunities to add a little magic to your press strategy. One standout way? Holiday décor. A thoughtfully styled space, decked out for the season, can catch an editor’s eye and turn into an incredible press feature like the one above with our client Drew Michael Scott of Lone Fox.

Here’s how it worked for another one of our clients:

This client initially reached out hoping to get her neutral-toned home featured in a magazine. While the space was lovely, placing neutral interiors can be a challenge without a unique angle. We passed on the project initially, but encouraged her to think about how she might reframe her pitch.

Fast forward a few months, and she returned with her home beautifully styled for the holidays—think glowing trees, festive garlands, and cozy, seasonal touches. It was the perfect transformation, and we instantly knew it was a winner.

The result? A stunning four-page spread in American Farmhouse magazine, complete with a breakout box featuring her “Top Tips for an Elegant Table.” 🎄✨

Why Does Holiday Décor Work So Well for Press?

Media outlets love holiday stories because they resonate with readers and provide a sense of nostalgia and inspiration. And while these stories publish in November or December, editors usually plan them a year or more in advance for print. It can also be more challenging for editors to find great spaces decorated for Christmas, so the competition is much less for these types of stories. That means the holidays are not just about celebrating—they’re an opportunity to market yourself creatively.

How You Can Leverage Holiday Styling for Press

  1. Start with Your Own Home
It can be hard to ask clients if you can go back and shoot their home for the holidays, but don’t let that hold you back. Use your own space to showcase your creativity. A beautifully styled tree, an elegant table setting, or even a holiday bar cart can be the foundation for a pitch.

  2. Think Beyond the Whole House
You don’t need to decorate an entire home to stand out. A single, well-executed vignette—like a mantle dripping with greenery or a festive holiday tablescape setup—can be just as compelling.

  3. Repurpose Your Content
Once you’ve styled and photographed your holiday décor, consider how you can extend its value. Submit it for features in magazines, and then use the photos for your social channels, website and to affiliate link products you used tagging brands you love. One project can become multiple pieces of content and get shared by the brands you tag.

My Personal Experience

Several years ago, I styled a holiday bar cart for a feature tied to my company’s rebrand. It landed an online story with RUE magazine and gave me content to repurpose for my lifestyle blog. This small project turned into a big win, proving that you don’t need to go over the top to make an impact.

The Bottom Line

Holiday décor isn’t just about creating a festive atmosphere—it’s a powerful tool for gaining press and showcasing your expertise. Whether you’re styling a client’s home or your own, embrace the season and get creative. You never know when a little holiday magic will turn into your next big feature!
